Description

This is chapter one of the book Folk Narratives from East Nusa Tenggara: Cerita Rakyat Dari Nusa Tenggara Timur.

The idea of this multilingual folk narrative book was born from the communication between scholars from Indonesia and Estonia who were part of the OCSEAN (Oceanic and Southeast Asian Navigators) project. A co-creation lead by Merili Metsvahi from the University of Tartu and Thersia Tamelan from the Universitas Kristen Artha Wacana who was leading the local team who collected, recorded, transcribed and translated the stories. In this book the oral telling of the story is kept as much to the original as possible, the voice of the teller is so better preserved. The stories are not anonymous, all the narrators are named, and the relation between the collector and narrator is revealed in each short introduction before the stories from a certain region. A teacher training was also conducted for the use of the book in native language learning and folk story telling.
