The Role of Mapuche Literature in the Teaching of Mapuzugun

Description

The relationship between Mapuzugun literature and language learning is complex and deeply
rooted in the historical context of colonization. The written history of Mapuzugun, which began
as a tool for evangelization, has been marked by a tension between preservation and
assimilation. Despite this, Mapuche literature has the potential to play a significant role in the
revitalization of the language, particularly when connected to the values and spirituality
inherent to Mapuche culture. This chapter explores the ways in which Mapuche literature can
be used as a resource for learning Mapuzugun, highlighting the work of authors such as María
Isabel Lara Millapan and Manuel Manquilef, who have made significant contributions to the
development of Mapuche literature and language education. The use of song, known as
"ülkantun," is also discussed as a powerful tool for linguistic revitalization and learning.
Ultimately, the chapter argues that the autonomy of Mapuche literature is crucial for its
development and that it should not be reduced to a mere tool for language learning. Instead, it
should be valued and recognized as a vital part of Mapuche culture and identity, with the
potential to promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of the language and its
significance in the context of Mapuche history and spirituality. The methodology of this
research consisted of a systematic review of Mapuche literature related to the teaching and
learning of Mapuzugun, whether directly through the development of teaching materials or
indirectly from a motivational perspective.
