Abstract: A harmonious smile depends on the balanced interaction of teeth, gingiva, and lips, and disturbances in this relationship can lead to excessive gingival display, commonly referred to as a gummy smile. This condition arises from a combination of factors, including skeletal discrepancies, altered tooth eruption patterns, soft tissue characteristics, and periodontal changes.
Because of its multifactorial nature, careful identification of the underlying cause is essential for effective treatment. Diagnosis involves detailed clinical evaluation supported by radiographic analysis and dynamic assessment of smile patterns. Recent advancements, including digital smile analysis, have improved diagnostic accuracy and patient communication. Management is tailored to the specific etiology and may involve orthodontic correction, periodontal procedures,
minimally invasive soft tissue interventions, or surgical approaches in more severe cases. In many situations, collaboration among dental specialties is necessary to achieve predictable and stable outcomes. A structured, individualized approach is key to restoring both esthetic harmony and functional balance.
