RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF MODERN WASTE MANAGEMENT CONCEPTS IN UKRAINEDURING THE WAR AND POST-WAR PERIOD

Description

Under the current conditions of war and subsequent post-war recovery, Ukraine faces numerous environmental and economic challenges. One critical point is the strategic implementation of the circular economy in the waste management system. Therefore, guiding documents and recommendations have been compiled for the implementation of modern concepts of waste collection, sorting, recycling, and waste utilization at all levels–from local to national – considering the specific conditions of war-torn regions and the long-term perspective of post-war recovery. This document summarises the current status (as of June 2025) of information on waste management during war in Ukraine and for the first post-war activities. It is intended to serve as a practical aid for the effective implementation and operation of a waste and secondary resource management system focusing on municipal solid waste and demolition waste during and after the war. Addressed stakeholder/user groups can be municipalities, waste management companies, internationalfoundations/organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), public and volunteer organizations, Associations of environmental professionals, etc. This guideline does not claim to be comprehensive at every level; it provides only key aspects, exemplary information on current projects and initiatives, and reflects the Author´s knowledge gained during the past two years as well as personal experiences from her country.
